Naginata

During the Heian period, most yari produced were of the su-yari (straight blade), then in the middle-to-late Heian period the production of Naginata became popular.  Like the Yari, this weapon was mounted on a pole but the blade was more substantial and curved with a single cutting edge that swelled out towards the point.  The power of the great Buddhist monasteries was at its height at the time and the Sohei or warrior-monks were invariably armed with naginata as well as swords. At the end of the Heian period, the Gempei Wars between the Taira and Minamoto clans  both employed Sohei in their ranks and the naginata was widely used.
